Tell Hyatt to Stop Abusing Housekeepers

This week, thousands of Hyatt hotel workers in four cities nationwide--Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu—are on strike. They are on strike not only to win a fair contract at their own hotels, but to take a stand against Hyatt's abuse of hotel workers in cities across the country.

By striking, workers are standing up for decent jobs for themselves and their families, but they are also fighting for the right to take a stand with other Hyatt workers against an abusive employer that is destroying good jobs in their North American hotels.

The people who clean, staff and help make Hyatt Hotels successful are simply seeking protections on the job.

It's time we turned up the heat on Hyatt and call on the hotel management to stop abusing housekeepers.

As a traveler and someone familiar with Hyatt hotels, I was shocked to learn of Hyatt’s abuse of housekeepers. Take for instance this past July, when Hyatt turned heat lamps on striking workers during a record-breaking heat wave this summer. Media reports suggest that a 'rogue' Hyatt manager switched on 10 heat lamps strung up on an awning above picketing workers.

Unfortunately, this incident is part of a pattern of abusive practices by Hyatt toward housekeeping staff.

For years, housekeepers have been calling on Hyatt to create safer working conditions. Hyatt housekeeper injury rates are high, and housekeepers at some Hyatts clean as many as 30 rooms a day. Some Hyatt housekeepers are expected to clean bathroom floors on their hands and knees, a degrading practice that should not be tolerated. You routinely place dangerous workloads on employees, and refuse to address these concerns. 
No one should fear for their employer physically endangering them--whether on the job or on the picket line. It's time for Hyatt to negotiate with housekeepers for a safer, more respectful workplace.
