For far too long, Big Business has been manipulating our weak labor and immigration laws to exploit vulnerable workers. As the immigration debate heats up in Congress this year, corporate-backed legislators and lobbyists are stealthily pushing for ‘reforms’ that will allow employers to hurt all workers no matter where they were born.

We can’t risk any more policies that drag down job standards and wages, create more loopholes for employers to exploit workers, or create any more imbalances in our economy.

Immigration reform can raise the floor for all workers if policymakers adopt broader, stronger labor protections.

Tell Congress you want them to make immigration reform work for all workers. Stand with us and sign our petition TODAY »

The state of California just found a Walmart contractor guilty of underpaying 800 warehouse workers more than $1 million in wages.

Now the workers responsible for whistleblowing say they are being harassed at work and are afraid of losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, Walmart’s contractor is denying it did anything wrong and is appealing the ruling.

If Walmart actually enforced its “Standards for Suppliers,” these workers wouldn’t have to fight for back wages, or fight to protect their jobs.

That’s why on the first week of March, we’re joining these warehouse workers to deliver a message directly to the company’s board to demand that Walmart take responsibility for its warehouses by enforcing its Standards for Suppliers.

Show your support for these courageous whistleblowers. Add your name to our petition today »

Dr. King knew the struggle for justice wouldn’t end with integrated lunch counters. In this rare footage shot only a year before his death, he explains his vision of “genuine equality.”

These words are as true today as they were 45 years ago. This MLK Day, honor his legacy by signing our pledge to fight for an economy that works for all of us.

Millions of people are still out of work; meanwhile the largest corporations in the world are drowning worker voices by pouring more money than ever into our political system. We know the fight for economic justice isn’t over yet, but we’re not about to stop fighting. Are you?

  • URGENT: Calls Needed to Fix Senate Rules

The current rules that govern the Senate are hurting our democracy. Right now, the filibuster rules allow just a handful of senators to hold back progress for working families’ by railroading key legislation.

There's finally a chance to update the Senate rules, make the legislative process more transparent, and help move our country forward. The Senate is voting soon on a proposal to reform the rules. We're so close – but we've been burned by narrow votes before. Will you help ensure we've got the votes to win?

Please take one minute to make a quick call to ask your senators to fix the Senate rules.

Use our easy look-up tool to find the direct line for your senators. Or just dial the Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121 if you know their names.

Here are some talking points to use during your calls:

    — Hi, my name is _______.

    — I'm calling to urge the senator to vote for Senate rules reform, including returning to a talking filibuster. Thank you.

After you make your calls to each senator, tell us how they went using the form below. (Please also tell us your senators' names and state!)

  • How did your call go?

Time and time again, we are told by Congressional staff that every call is taken seriously. Every call is documented and used to keep track of constituent opinions in the district.

  • URGENT: Call Your Senator to Demand Jobs, Not Cuts

Just a few more minutes of your time can make a real difference in ensuring your senator gets the message that working families are opposed to a bad budget deal.

Please keep the pressure on by making an emergency call to your senators right now.

Use our easy look-up tool to find the direct line for your senators. Or just dial the Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121 if you know their names

Here are some talking points to use during your calls:

    — Hi, my name is _______ I'm calling to urge Senator _____ to resist budget cuts that slow our economy and hurt families.

    — As you face critical decisions around the deficit, I urge you that you support budget agreements that

    – Prioritize job creation first. Any budget agreement must include investments in good jobs, education and infrastructure improvements.

    – Ask all Americans to pay their fair share of taxes. The Bush tax cuts for people making more than $250,000 a year must not be extended.

    – Do not cut Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits and do not shift costs to beneficiaries or the states.

    – Stop sequestration. Automatic budget cuts will put too many people out of work and will be devastating to families and communities in need.

After you make your calls to each senator, tell us how they went using the form below. Please also tell us your senators' names and state!

  • Speak up for jobs, NOT cuts today!

With Congress back in session, everything is on the table in this budget debate. There are currently proposals moving to reduce the federal deficit by imposing job-killing budget cuts and slashing Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid – all the while protecting tax breaks for the rich.

We all need to pay our fair share. We cannot allow the fiscal burden to shift to working families who are already hurting from an economic crisis caused by Wall Street.

All around the country people are coming together to call on federal policymakers to ensure:

    • No more tax cuts for the richest 2% of Americans.

    • No benefit cuts for Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid.

    • Yes to jobs and economic security for all.

Join them by urging your senators to resist budget cuts that slow our economy and hurt working families.

Write your senators NOW to urge them to stand firm for jobs, not cuts!

    Stand With Striking Walmart Workers

Walmart has become the focus of viral, historic strikes by workers in stores and at warehouses across the country.

Time and time again, when Walmart workers have come together to call on the company to address issues with understaffing, scheduling, wages, benefits, safety, and just plain respect in the workplace, the company has attempted to silence them.

Without an end to the retaliation and mistreatment, Walmart workers around the country are prepared to strike on the biggest sales day of the year - Black Friday, November 23.

Let's show the media and the Walton family that we have these workers' backs. Join with Walmart workers in solidarity by signing our petition.

We'll make sure workers know you're standing with them to demand better working conditions and change at Walmart.

    Sign the Cyber Monday Pledge

Here's the real deal on online shipping – the whole system is built on unsafe, low-paying, temporary jobs. Workers in U.S. shipping centers and warehouses that fulfill online orders for major retailers are subject to dangerous, sweatshop-like working conditions. These workers are consistently asked to work at unreasonable and backbreaking speeds, and they endure the pain because they’re afraid of losing their jobs.

This system won't change until consumers stand up together and let online retailers know that we care more about how they treat their workers than the speedy shipping they're offering us.

That's why this Cyber Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year, instead of sending our money to companies like Amazon and Walmart – we're sending a message that we choose safe, sustainable jobs over steals and deals.

  • Walmart: Meet with your Warehouse Workers

Following months of extreme tension, high temperatures, and intense pressure in a major Walmart-contracted warehouse, courageous workers – without having a recognized union – went on strike this morning to protest retaliation by their warehouse employers. They are calling for safe working conditions and that Walmart take responsibility for working conditions in the warehouse.

To date, Walmart has ignored repeated requests for a meeting to discuss safer working conditions. Now, the workers are asking for our support. Sign the petition to Walmart executives demanding they meet with these workers.

On Monday, September 17, our signatures will be delivered by workers to executives at Walmart in Los Angeles following a six-day, 50-mile march by workers from their warehouses.

  • Stand Up to Verizon!

Verizon workers need our supportAugust 6, 2012 marks one year since 45,000 Verizon workers went on strike. Thanks to an outpouring of solidarity, Verizon was forced back to the table to negotiate for a fair contract.

Now, Verizon employees have spent over 365 days working without a contract. Workers are taking their message to the streets and picketing Verizon stores up and down the east coast.

Verizon workers on the picket line need our support.

Use our online form below to send a message to Verizon board member Richard Carrion and make it clear: it's time to make a fair deal.

  • Don't Feed Corporate Greed

    Darden CEO Clarence Otis

As CEO of the Darden Group, Clarence Otis took home $8.5 million last year. Meanwhile his employees earn as little as $2.13 an hour.

It seems fair wages and affordable healthcare aren't on the menu at Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and other restaurants chains operated by the Darden Group. But corporate greed and looking out for other executives is.

And as a board member at Verizon, Otis approved a 200% raise for CEO Lowell McAdam. Meanwhile 45,000 Verizon employees are still fighting for a fair contract for good jobs.

Tell Clarence Otis to stop feeding corporate greed:

  • Janet Napolitano: Stop Deporting Labor Organizers

Southern 32Right now, 32 workers from the South are about to be deported because they stood up for their labor and civil rights.

Like others throughout the country, these Southern 32 were retaliated against after exposing civil and labor rights violations at their jobs and in their communities. Now, ICE is trying to deport them.

We must stop their deportation so that their voices won’t be silenced as we continue to work for broader solution like the POWER Act to protect workers from retaliation.

You can help the Southern 32 and immigrants across the country who’ve stood up for civil, labor, and human rights by telling Janet Napolitano, United States Secretary of Homeland Security, to stop deporting these leaders and make sure her agents are actually implementing agency policies.

  • Occupy the Boardroom
  • Walmart CEO Mike Duke: Meet With OUR Walmart & Women's Groups

Walmart is the largest private employer in this country and nearly 60% of its hourly employees are women. It sets the standards for the retail industry, its suppliers, and for employers in general. How Walmart treats women ultimately has ramifications for all women, not just those who work in its stores.

And unfortunately, according to many of its Associates, Walmart is not truly a place of opportunity for women. The company avoided accountability recently when the Supreme Court dismissed the class action status of Dukes v. Walmart, the largest sex discrimination case in history. And although the company just announced “women friendly initiative,” the effort doesn’t address a core problem at Walmart: the way women who work there are treated.

Tell Walmart CEO Mike Duke to meet with members of the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart) and national women's organizations to hear their concerns about how women at Walmart are treated and their policy recommendations.

  • We need JOBS, not unfair trade agreements.

Congress is considering three dangerous new "free trade" agreements -- with Colombia, Panama, and Korea.  With more than 25 million Americans desperately searching for full-time jobs, the last thing our leaders should be focused on is trade deals that won't create jobs or help working families.

  • No More Red Tape! Stop Job-Killing E-Verify Legislation

H.R. 2164 would make it mandatory for nearly every employer in the U.S. to use a computer program to access an error-prone government database to verify whether or not a job applicant is eligible to work before any worker could start a new job through a process known as “e-verify.”  This legislation is expected to be taken up by the House Judiciary committee for markup at the end of this week.

E-Verify will hurt all businesses and the fragile economy, and will leave workers more vulnerable to abuse on the job by giving unscrupulous employers yet another tool to use against workers who try to stand up for their rights.

  • Tell Hyatt to Stop Abusing Housekeepers

This week, thousands of Hyatt hotel workers in four cities nationwide--Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu—are on strike. They are on strike not only to win a fair contract at their own hotels, but to take a stand against Hyatt's abuse of hotel workers in cities across the country.

By striking, workers are standing up for decent jobs for themselves and their families, but they are also fighting for the right to take a stand with other Hyatt workers against an abusive employer that is destroying good jobs in their North American hotels.

The people who clean, staff and help make Hyatt Hotels successful are simply seeking protections on the job.

It's time we turned up the heat on Hyatt and call on the hotel management to stop abusing housekeepers.

  • Tell Congress: We need jobs! Tax Wall Street to Heal Main Street

September 2nd's dismal jobs report reminds us that we’re in a jobs emergency requiring bold federal action.

Despite massive fraud and reckless greed that wrecked our economy, throwing millions of Americans out of work and out of their homes, not a single Wall Street "bankster" has gone to jail.

Tell Congress: Tax Wall Street to heal Main Street, and put America back to work.

  • Tell Hershey's: Don't Exploit Student Guestworkers

On August 17, hundreds of student guestworkers from around the world were joined by unemployed American workers and labor leaders in a factory sit-in at the Hershey Chocolate Company packing plant in Pennsylvania.

The students paid $3,000-$6,000 each to come to the U.S. this summer for what they thought would be a cultural exchange program. Instead, they found themselves packing chocolates at the Hershey's plant in deeply exploitative conditions.

Their demands: end the exploitation of student workers at the Hershey's plant, return the money they paid for a cultural exchange, and make these jobs living wage jobs for local Pennsylvania workers.  You can read more and watch video about the struggle here.

  • Stop Verizon Greed!

    SIGN NOW

45,000 Verizon workers went on strike on Sunday, August 7th.  The reason? Despite record profits, Verizon pushed proposals at the bargaining table that would let them outsource more jobs, including sending jobs overseas, slash sick days, eliminate benefits for workers who get hurt on the job and cut the healthcare benefits they promised retirees.

On Saturday, August 20th, CWA and IBEW announced that they had reached an agreement on bargaining with Verizon.  The unions did not agree to any of the company’s concessionary demands to reach agreement.  Instead, it was the solidarity we all showed that created the opportunity for progress. The strike brought Verizon to their knees and brought the company back to the table negotiate in good faith. They need your help to keep the pressure on Verizon to help win a fair contract with decent wages, good benefits and job security.

America has had enough of corporate greed.

Sign the petition now to tell Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam to stop Verizon’s attack on the middle class and share his company’s success with those who made it possible.  It's time to let Verizon and other greedy corporations know that enough is enough.  We're not just going to "hold the line", we're going to MOVE the line!

  • Tell Walmart: Intervene Before Labor Activists Are Sentenced to Death

  • Fair Elections for Airline & Rail Workers

Imagine an election where all non-voters are counted as “NO” voters.  It’s undemocratic, and it would make it extremely hard to get enough “YES” votes to pass anything.

That’s exactly what House Transportation Chairman John Mica has in mind for airline and railway workers who are voting in union elections.  Mica, who has taken more than $620,000 in campaign contributions from the airline industry, has put a provision into the FAA reauthorization bill that would make it much more difficult for railway and airline employees to form unions.

Under this rule, even if more people voted “yes” than voted “no”, the yeses could still lose.  Can you think of ANY election that works this way?  We would never tolerate this kind of voting in our political elections; why would we allow it in union elections?

Congress is expected to vote on the provision TOMORROW – we need to make sure they know we are actually paying attention!

  • Don't Defund Bank Regulators

Corporations and Wall street banks are trying bold new ways to prevent government from protecting regular Americans from Wall Street and Corporate Greed.  Lately, they’re attempting to simply eliminate funding for the agencies.

Tell Congress not to strangle the regulators by cutting off the funding needed to do the job.

  • Don't Chip Away at Bank Reforms

The big banks have been lobbying Tim Geithner (himself a product of Wall Street) to let them continue trillions of dollars of risky derivatives trading without any oversight.  Rumor has it that he is listening. Tell Geithner not to exempt these dangerous financial activities.

  • VETO Cuts to State UI Benefits; SUPPORT Extended Benefits Fix

The Michigan legislature has passed a bill that would CUT state unemployment eligibility to only 20 weeks. If this bill is signed into law by Governor Snyder, Michigan would become the ONLY state in the nation to reduce the maximum weeks of state benefits to less than the national standard of 26 weeks.

This terrible idea is absolutely unthinkable in Michigan, which has had above-average unemployment for over a decade and has suffered the longest period of double-digit unemployment in the country.

Tell Governor Snyder to veto the bill on his desk and to pass a technical fix to state law which would allow jobless Michiganders to continue receiving extended Federal unemployment benefits.

  • Stop the Attacks on Indiana's Workers

In this still-struggling economy, Indiana needs one thing:  more good jobs. But instead of focusing on finding ways to create good jobs, politicians have turned their attention to political payback to the corporate CEOs who spent more than $1 billion on the November elections.

Corporate-backed lawmakers are trying to use state budget problems as an excuse to gut workers’ rights and benefits, when in fact it was Wall Street’s gambles and broken promises that have hurt taxpayers and the middle class—not workers. CEOs are trying to shift the blame for high unemployment and rising poverty levels away from themselves and onto workers and our unions.

We need your URGENT ACTION to let our politicians know that we won't let them roll back the clock on workers' rights.

  • No Korea Free Trade Agreement!

The biggest free trade agreement since NAFTA is about to hit the floor of Congress.  On February 9, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk testified before the House Ways & Means Committee that the White House will be submitting the Korea Free Trade Agreement for a vote within the next few weeks.

The Korea FTA was negotiated and signed in 2007, but President Bush was never able to get it through Congress. President Obama campaigned against it during his bid for the White House, but recently dusted it off and has been running with it as his own.  This despite the fact that even the federal government's own International Trade Commission (ITC) predicts that the Korea FTA will increase the overall U.S. trade deficit — meaning more job loss at a time when the country can least afford it.

Take action now to stop this deal!

  • It's time for Rite Aid to negotiate fairly

The Rite Aid drug stores employ thousands of workers who are fighting for more respect and a voice on the job. Since Rite Aid’s CEO John Standley doubled his salary to over $4 million, he’s been trying to cut pay and benefits for workers at the company’s retail stores and distribution centers:

        * In Ohio, Rite Aid officials are going after the health care benefits for retail store employees.
        * In Pennsylvania, Rite Aid workers are trying to get a decent contract without big benefit cuts.
        * In Rome, NY, Rite Aid just announced they are closing a union warehouse and going non-union.
        * In Lancaster, CA, 500 warehouse workers have been fighting for over 5 years to get a union contract.

Let’s help these workers who are standing up and fighting back!

  • Tell Congress: We need help for the unemployed, not tax cuts for the rich!

A record one in seven Americans is living in poverty.  Nearly 27 million Americans who want to work cannot find a job or full-time work.  There is only one job available for every five people who need work.

On December 1st, things got worse.  Another 800,000 people got their last unemployment check because Congress failed to extend unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed before the November 30th deadline.  By the end of the year, 2 million will lose their benefits.  Another 1 million will lose benefits in January.  That's on top of the estimated one million who already timed-out of the extended insurance, or the millions more who couldn't qualify in the first place.

Jobs with Justice knows the answer to the unemployment crisis is a serious federal jobs program, and an agenda for full and fair employment.  But as long as unemployment is still at emergency levels, we need emergency jobless benefits for all unemployed workers until the economy recovers.

Tell Congress to vote to extend Unemployment Insurance and the TANF Emergency Fund until the economy recovers, not to extend tax cuts to the rich.

  • Let Young People Follow their DREAMs!

On Monday, November 29th the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the DREAM Act.  Sen. Harry Reid has pledged to bring the DREAM Act up before a stand-alone vote in the Senate before the end of the 2010 Congressional session.

The Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act, commonly known as the DREAM Act, would give young people a chance to have an equal opportunity at the American Dream in the only place they know as home: the United States.  The DREAM Act will allow children who were brought to the United States before age 16, who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years, graduated from high school, and are of good moral character the opportunity to earn citizenship through at least two years of college or military service.  Every year, 65,000 students are denied the right to an education based on the status of their documentation.

Tell your Representative to support the DREAM Act!

  • Tell Congress: We need help for the unemployed, not tax cuts for the rich!

Congress is about to go home for Thanksgiving without extending unemployment benefits, which will mean that over 2 million Americans will be cut off from their existing unemployment benefits this holiday season. The TANF Emergency Fund, which subsidized 240,000 jobs for low-income families and youth has yet to be renewed by Congress.

There are 5 job-seekers for every available opening.  If every single available job in the country were filled tomorrow, there would STILL be 11 million people looking for work.

The unemployment rate hasn’t changed – so why do conservative members of Congress want to change the rules for who can receive unemployment benefits?

SEND AN EMAIL BELOW AND THEN CALL YOUR SENATORS AT 1-877-662-2889

Tell Congress to vote to extend Unemployment Insurance and the TANF Emergency Fund until the economy recovers, not to extend tax cuts to the rich.

  • Tell US Airways to cut ties with anti-union consultants

Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of US Airways, is paying $375 per hour to the notorious unionbusting firm Labor Relations Institute (LRI) in a ploy to keep its workers from exercising their right to form a union.

Workers shouldn't face interference or coercion – Piedmont and US Airways should allow their workers to decide for themselves if they want to form a union.

Ask US Airways CEO Doug Parker to cut ties with LRI. It could make all the difference for workers at Piedmont.

  • Extend the TANF Emergency Fund

The TANF Emergency Fund is an emergency jobs program through which 37 states have provided subsidized jobs for nearly 250,000 otherwise unemployed parents and youth — helping families, businesses, and communities across America weather the recession — will end September 30 unless the Senate joins the House in voting to extend it.

You can find out how many jobs would be affected in your state here:http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3274#_ftn1

  • Tell Congress: Fix the Jobs Crisis

People are angry, and for good reason.  Corporate greed and recklessness have driven the country into a crisis, and leaders in Washington have yet to offer any real solutions.

Banks are making bumper earnings and corporations are raking in record profits and sitting on more than $8 Trillion in cash reserves.  Meanwhile, 15 million Americans are out of work, and without a major federal investment in creating jobs, (official) jobless rates will be 8-13% into the next decade.

Tell Congress:  There is no such thing as a jobless recovery.  Fix the jobs crisis now!

  • Don't Let the Banks Steal Our Victory

The big banks thought they killed financial reform last year, but through the efforts and activism of JwJ members and countless allies across the country, we were able to overcome $1.5 million a day of bank lobbying and we won the first round of the fight to take back our economy from Wall Street and the corporate agenda.

Now these same big money interests want to undo that victory by blocking appointment of Elizabeth Warren as head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) because they are afraid she might actually protect consumers at the expense of bank and corporate profits.

Don't let them undermine the reforms!  Tell President Obama to name Elizabeth Warren as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

  • Tell your Senators to Extend Medicaid Funding & Save Jobs

The Senate is expected to vote soon on whether to extend the increased federal Medicaid match (FMAP) contained in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Medicaid is one of most states' largest budget items, with low-income families, hospitals and providers depending on reliable federal support, especially during tough economic times.  Ending it prematurely would be a major setback for our local and national economic recovery.

With state budgets in crisis, hundreds of thousands of public and private sector jobs threatened, and health care for millions of low-income Americans hanging in the balance, Congress must act now.

  • ACT NOW to Hold Banks Accountable

They said we couldn't do it.  But they were wrong.  JwJ and our partners overcame $1.5 Million PER DAY of banker lobbying!

On Thursday, the Senate plans to vote on the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act.  This financial reform bill that takes some key steps towards breaking the control that Wall Street has over our country -- and we need everyone to act now to pass it!

Last summer, insiders pronounced banking reform "dead."  They said 'everyone' had forgotten about the Wall Street bailout and the obscene bonuses -- and that Congress was too dependent on bank money as it approached election season to do anything that would actually make a difference.  But a series of mobilizations across the country kept the heat on Congress and an important step towards breaking the power of the banks is within our grasp.

Let's be real:  The Dodd-Frank bill, already passed by the US House, is not the end of the struggle.  The big banks are still too big.  They still need to be broken up and reined in further, and Dodd-Frank will not end the foreclosure crisis nor put workers and communities in charge of corporate/bank decisions.

The struggle between people and Wall Street must continue, until we have Full and Fair Employment and a New Economy that works for everyone.  But this bill is an important first step, and deserves our support.

  • Tell your Senators: Vote YES to extend unemployment benefits

Unemployment benefits expired for 2.5 million long-term jobless back in May.  Since then, the Senate has almost restored unemployment benefits three times, but each time Republicans have blocked the votes with procedural delays.

Tomorrow, the unemployment benefits extension is expected to come to a vote.  Tell your Senators not to fall for GOP scare-tactics about the budget deficit -- or their offensive assertions that the unemployed are "spoiled" brats who are just "sitting there" collecting unemployment benefits.

One job for every five people looking for work is a jobless emergency, and we need emergency action now!

  • Tell Senator Voinovitch to Support Unemployed Ohioans!

Poor and working people in Ohio and our country are experiencing a jobs emergency.  Joblessness -- nearly six job-seekers for every job opening, record-high long-term unemployment -- is a leading cause of foreclosure and community instability, not to mention adding to enormous stress to our families.  Local businesses, community and religious institutions all suffer when families are forced to cut back due to lack of a decent job.

Senator Voinovitch is poised to play a crucial role in recognizing the crisis and voting to extend emergency jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans have already begun losing eligibility for these benefits, and all serious economists project high unemployment rate for at least a few years.

  • Tell Congress: Support the Local Jobs for America Act

14.6 million workers unemployed in the United States. One in ten Americans without work. One job opening for every 5.6 people looking. Congress must act now to create jobs and protect jobless benefits.

Congress just doesn't get it.  Joblessness is an emergency, and requires bold, emergency action.  Even if the economy begins to rebound today, it will take four to six years to close this job gap.  For our communities, this is unacceptable. Congress can and should do more to help struggling workers in the worst recession since in generations.

Congress must act now to save and create jobs, starting with the Local Jobs for America Act.

The Local Jobs for America Act will provide our economy a shot in the arm by putting a million people to work in local communities.  Specifically, the bill funds local governments and non-profit agencies to save and create jobs providing local services for two years.  Learn more.

  • Break up the banks; give us real reform, now!

It's hard to believe! Two years after the big banks crashed our economy and took trillions in bailouts (much more than just the TARP), they're giving themselves record bonuses and going back to business as usual: telling Congress what to do.

Even after Goldman-Sachs was finally charged with fraud by the SEC, none of the rules for the banks has changed - and many of the "too big to fail" bailout bandits used our money to become bigger than ever.

The financial reform bill being debated in the senate does do some positive things, but it proposes a weak consumer protection bureau under the control of the Federal Reserve (which is under the control of ... Wall Street) and does not even include one of the most important reforms: breaking up the big banks. As JwJ has argued for years, "too big to fail" is more than an economic risk; it is a threat to democracy.
