Sallie Mae, Forgive Student Debt Now!

Many student debt holders - 37 million currently - are finding out that the cost of obtaining a higher education in the U.S. far exceeds its benefits in this current economic climate. Millions of recent graduates wake up each morning facing a crisis never seen before in our country: their student loan debt far exceeds their parents’ credit card bills; they are either underemployed or unemployed and are unable to pay off their student loan debt even in their retirement years.  In some cases, the student loan debt transcends beyond the student to their parents and even grandparents.  Two thirds of students today are leaving school with debt that is averaging an estimated $25,000. Right now, this system is working fine for everyone except those that it is supposed to work for.

We're calling on Sallie Mae to do the right thing. Sign the petition below and stand on the side of students!

Now, we are demanding that Sallie Mae:

1. Forgive student debt. Starting by capping all interest rates on student loans to match the federal Stafford Loan (3.4%) and implementing an income-based repayment program modeled after the federal government, Sallie Mae must forgive student debt if we hope to have a real economic recovery.

2. Pledge to respect our democracy by keeping corporate money out of our elections: disclose corporate money in elections to date and pledge to keep all corporate money out of the 2012 and future elections. In the past 10 years, Sallie Mae has spent over $25 million lobbying.
