US Airways adds flights to Europe
Nonstop daily service to Madrid and Dublin will be added in May, but only for summer.

US Airways will add nonstop service in May from Charlotte to Madrid, Spain, and Dublin, Ireland, raising the number of European destinations it serves from the Queen City to six.
The new flights will operate daily but only in the summer, according to the airline, which didn't give prices or times. The airline said it would make a formal announcement today.
US Airways flies nonstop from Charlotte to London, Frankfurt, Paris and Rome, as well as 25 other international destinations, mostly in the Caribbean. US Airways partner airline Lufthansa flies daily from Charlotte to Munich.
In the last two years, US Airways has expanded its international service from Charlotte. It started its first South American flight from Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro and has applied for permission to fly from Charlotte to Sao Paulo, Brazil's business center.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved that flight, but the Tempe, Ariz.-based airline is still waiting on approval from Brazil.
The Paris and Rome flights are also recent, and the airline has started service from Charlotte to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos in Mexico.
The Dublin service will be unique in that it will be Charlotte/Douglas International Airport's first European flight on a narrow-body Boeing 757-200. Dublin flights will begin May 6 and end Sept. 30.
US Airways has several European flights from Philadelphia to smaller European cities such as Dublin that use Boeing 757s, but few European cities are reachable from Charlotte on that jet. The Charlotte-Dublin flight will have 176 seats.
The Madrid flight will begin May 4 and end Oct. 29. The airline will use a Boeing 767-200, which has 204 seats.
Immediately after its 2005 merger with America West, US Airways added international service, mostly from Philadelphia. After cutting a number of flights due to high fuel prices in 2008 and the recession in 2009, now the airline is adding back flights.
This time, some of the new service is coming to Charlotte. Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is the airline's largest hub, and with so many connecting flights from across the country, the airline believes the Dublin and Madrid routes can be profitable - even if there isn't much local traffic.
Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, which opened its fourth runway in February, has long-term plans for a new international terminal where the rental car lots are today.
But that plan is several years off, and aviation director Jerry Orr has said he might construct two new international gates at the end of Concourse E, used mostly for regional jets.
