Tell Congress: Don't Raise the Retirement Age!
Dear Alliance Member:
Social Security could be swept up in fever to reduce the national debt. Reportedly, there are proposals under consideration by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to raise the retirement age, reduce benefits and COLAs, or even privatize the Social Security system. Congress could act on proposals by the end of the year. Fortunately, we have allies in Congress who are ready to stand against drastic changes. If we act soon.
As we all know, Social Security, with a $2.5 trillion surplus, has not contributed to the national debt. Raising the retirement age and cutting benefits unfairly penalizes both current and future retirees who have worked for the benefits they earned.
In Congress now, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) is proposing a resolution to stop raising the retirement age. Also, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) is circulating a letter to be sent to the President opposing privatizing Social Security, raising the retirement age, and cutting benefits.
Please take a minute and send the attached letter to your member of Congress urging them to co-sponsor the Giffords resolution and sign the Grijalva letter.
