Let's Cook!

Chicago's Lunchroom Workers Campaign to Feed Kids the Food They Deserve

In January 2011, the lunchroom workers of Chicago released a report entitled, "Feeding Chicago's Kids the Food They Deserve – The Lunch Ladies' View of Meals at Chicago Public Schools." The report makes four major recommendations to the Chicago Board of Education.

We are concerned citizens, parents, and workers in Chicago who believe these changes would improve the lives of Chicago's school children.

We call on the Board of Education to act now to implement these proposals:

1. Actively solicit and incorporate workers' input as it improves school food.
2. Make a commitment to cooking, which means CPS needs to agree to:
• Avoid replacing cooked food with frozen food
• Build full-size cooking kitchens in all new schools
3. Help workers reach their full potential as caretakers for Chicago's children. They need comprehensive training on cooking, serving and eating healthy food.
4. Encourage workers to keep students and parents informed about food quality and safety in CPS schools.
