It’s time for Stanford University to demand that Classic Residence pay its supplemental tax bills and stop wasting county resources!

Classic Residence by Hyatt is a luxury retirement community that has operated on Stanford property since 2005. Stanford has made over $50 Million off its lease for the property. Classic Residence (now known as Vi) is owned by the billionaire family that controls the Hyatt Hotels Corporation. Hyatt owns and operates the Hyatt Santa Clara, where two sisters were fired after an objection was made to the posting of degrading pictures of them on a bulletin board at work.

Despite the success of Classic Residence at Palo Alto, its owners have appealed property taxes every year since 2005. Classic Residence’s appeals claim the facility is worth nearly half of the $370 Million which this company claimed it was worth when it opened. Last year, the County’s Tax Assessment Board issued a decision rejecting several of these appeals. As a result of that decision, Classic Residence estimated it may owe nearly $12 Million. Classic Residence responded with a lawsuit against the County.

Stanford’s lease requires Classic Residence to promptly pay its property tax bills. This money is desperately needed for our schools and other essential services.

We are students, working families, and religious leaders who live in Santa Clara County. We pay our fair share in taxes. Last year we voted to increase the sales tax to fight further cuts to crucial community services.

We call on Stanford University to ensure that for-profit operations on its campus pay their fair share.
