All Members of the University Community Deserve Respect!

More than 500 campus food service workers at York University and the University of Toronto are now in negotiations for new union contracts with global food service corporations, Aramark and Compass.

Too many of these workers are stuck –

•    Working for close to minimum wage
•    Working for too few hours or in part-time positions
•    With inadequate or no benefits for themselves or their families.

We can do better than this at York and U of T.

Universities are an integral part of any just society.

They are places of learning, places of teaching, and a space for all of society to ask questions that cannot or will not be asked anywhere else.

Universities are also communities themselves.

Whether we are students, or teachers, or workers – we are ALL part of the university community and, as such, we ALL deserve respect for the contributions we make.

This includes campus food service workers -- the men and women who serve the rest of us the food and drink that we require as teachers, researchers, and students to fulfill the basic mission of the university.

We, members of the university community, call upon Aramark and Compass to negotiate fair agreements with campus food service workers.

We call upon Compass and Aramark to work together with the food service workers on our campuses and their union, UNITE HERE, to establish a better standard for food service jobs on our campuses.

In doing so, our universities can be an example to the rest of Toronto of what a community grounded in real respect and dialogue could be.
